We attended the Federation of Awarding Bodies FAB Exhibition and Awards event on the 11th and 12th November 2021, with our partner A1 Security Print Limited.
It was a successful event, with lots of visitors and interest in our security print products. During the event it became clear that degree fraud is something that is increasingly a problem.
The degree is a symbol of value, a physical demonstration of hard work and dedication towards a skill or subject. Unfortunately, there is a growing number of people who engage in degree fraud to create fake qualifications causing problems for students, employers and awarding bodies alike.
This week is International Fraud Awareness Week (14-20 November 2021) so a good time to address degree fraud, and how to prevent it, especially given our recent attendance at the Federation of Awarding Bodies exhibition.
In simple terms, degree fraud is the creation of fake or fraudulent certificates not legally accredited by a university or awarding body and is something that someone can purchase rather than achieve by legitimate academic channels. Consequently, degree fraud devalues a qualification making it something achieved by cost, rather than skill.
Degree fraud can affect all levels of the academic process and inevitably within higher education this fraud can have a negative impact on graduates, universities, potential employers and even the economy.
The primary prevention methods for degree fraud are printed on the certificate itself. These range from holograms to security inks, specially generated numbering schemes and bespoke security designs, for example, background designs, anti-photocopy messages, microtext and watermarks.
